ALEXANDRE BAIN
Loire, France
We met Alexandre fisrt time at La dive back in 2018 and was already then so impressed by his work. Finally we got the opportunity to bring his wines and share them in Portugal.
Alexandre’s passion for working the land was inspired by his grandfather who was a farmer. At 18 he decided to go to a winemaking school in Beaune. He worked for several different vignerons until he was finally able to buy a few hectares of vines in 2007 in Tracy-sur-Loire, in the heart of the Pouilly-Fumé appellation, from his grandfather.
Alexandre now works on 11 hectars and offers several vintages including: 'Pierre Précieuse' and 'La levée' which come from grapes grown on limestone soils with little or no arable land and high stoniness. This soil brings a lot of roundness to the wine. The 'Mademoiselle M' cuvée comes from another type of limestone, the famous Kimmeridgian (marl with small oysters, 140 million years old). The soil is greasier and much more difficult to work. This specificity brings more structure, length and finesse to the wine. Ripe, rich and fat Sauvignons for which the minerality expresses itself with age.
The style of his wines is the reverse of what has been done in the Pouilly-Fumé appellation for several decades. Sauvignon with very heady aromas, sometimes like spices, exotic fruits... vintages that are always stunning and have an undeniable ability to combine freshness and maturity.
The philosophy is to bottle natural wines, 100% grape juice. Alexandre Bain does not add anything in his wines since 2014. The wines are different from the classic and traditional style of Pouilly Fumé, they are so pure and alive.
